Working in a culturally diverse workplace: the do’s and the dont’s
Without the need for statistical evidence, we can all agree that the workplace is becoming increasingly diverse. All of us have experienced moments of awkwardness and discomfort when cultural miscommunication occurs. So how does one diplomatically resolve and avoid this?
To begin with, look past cultural differences and respect the individual. It’s true; don’t judge a book by its cover. What’s more, don’t even judge it by its binding, size, page qualities and character style.
As human beings, we tend to categorize information to prevent intellectual overload. And unfortunately, this adapted ability creates stereotypes. To combat this natural tendency, look past initial impressions and express sincere desire to connect with the individual.
Next, be helpful because a sincere desire to assist is most likely met with appreciation, not resistance. This can be a great starting point to continued communication.
Expect verbal and electronic miscommunication because English is idiomatic and contains conversational slang. Therefore, keep all communication clear and concise to avoid misunderstanding.
Finally, examine your own attitude because we all tend to believe that our way is the right way. Stay open minded and be willing to experience new cultures because globalization will simply not wait.
